Super Cute Tag...

My friend, Katie, did this on her blog and I thought it was so creative! I decided to make it my "fun and pointless" thing that I attempt to make myself do every once in a while. I like doing something like this that allows me to turn off my brain, emotions, etc. and just be silly! Don't we all? So, anyone else who finds it amusing enough and needs a silly sane-maker moment, consider yourself tagged!
With this one the deal was to do a google image search with your answer to the question and use a picture off the first page of results.

1. Age at next birthday:
27
(I have no idea what this is a picture of...but the artsy side of me approved...)

1. A place I'd like to visit:
Prince Edward Island
This is actually a picture of Green Gables! My heart does a little sigh...

3. A favorite place
A bookstore!

4. One of my favorite things to do:
dance, dance, dance!

5. A favorite food:
broccoli!
I have been converted to broccoli by my husband, who loves it! I never was partial to it and I'm still working toward loving it raw, but I could eat a whole plate of steamed broccoli...mmmm...

6. My favorite flower:
lily

7. My favorite color:
Red

The city I live in:
Gilbert

8. The name of a past pet:
Sassy
Oh, how I loved my cat! There was, of course, Lucy too but that search didn't return such wonderful results as a goat wearing lipstick.

9. A nickname I've had:
Babe
Well, my husband calls me that anyway. :) And I like it. By the way, I don't recommend doing an image search titled "babe." I was naive enough to think there would be maybe some baseball pictures and perhaps one or two pictures of a pig...

10. My college major:
Hair
I didn't do a great job at picking something and sticking with it...the closest I came was most of beauty school!

11. My first job:
a receptionist

12. My hope for 2008:
Calm
All right, I'm not crazy enough to expect any large amounts of calm in a world run by toddlers and an infant! (Notice even in the picture, there is a baby smiley face sitting on the mommy smiley face's lap!) But, if their doings and playings and lovings and demandings are the most hectic thing I've got going on for a while, I will call that a miracle of calm! I'm not looking for an easy ride, maybe just a quieter one for a while as the dust begins to settle for our family. It is so fun and rewarding to feel that happening...I feel like I talk about this a lot but in this busy mind of mine, it makes all the difference to breathe a little easier and be able to enjoy the small things again as my eyes uncross a little from a few hectic, yet very blessed, years! : )

Flowers for our Front Yard!!!

I feel like we're moving up in the world! We planted some flowers! I have always wanted to do this as a family but it always seemed too big an undertaking. Yet, as I felt myself actually beginning to relax and breathe a little bit this spring, I knew...it was time. Hooray! So, one day we got up, headed out and found ourselves at a nearby garden center. Bethany and James each got to choose some flowers to plant (I knew this could end up less than attractive but I really thought that what mattered is that they were involved, interested and happy with the result!) and we ended up with orange and yellow marigolds. Turns out they have a knack for complimentary colors! Now, to be completely honest, I have never planted flowers before that I can remember but I do feel I'm a bit of a gardening/tree hugging/just-like-to-play-in-the-mud kind of girl at heart so I want this to be something we do as a family starting early on! So, following are some snapshots of our adventures on a spring day...

Here's James getting all ready, complete with a gardening hat and a yellow watering can to match his flowers!

And here are our new flower friends, excited to be a part of our home...or something like that...you gotta tell the kids something to get them excited...

Bethany and I digging right in...

They were so excited to give the flowers a new home.

James mostly just liked to hold his shovel...if you notice, he changed his hat. I think JC bribed him...

The finished project! I'm not sure I chose the best layout but I do know it was the easiest! Haha, we'll see if we can get a bit more creative next year!

Though they don't always "get" everything on the same level us grownups might, it is really fun to see them excited about projects and learning more about how the world around them works. I hope that our little experience this year, mostly revolving around learning about where flowers live, what they eat for food, how to not squish them when handling them and how they grow, etc. will plant some seeds (Ha! I was accidentally funny again...someday I will learn to do it on purpose...) of love and appreciation for our earth and all the wonderful gifts it gives to us! So...happy late Earth Day everyone!

P.S. please don't ask me if the flowers are still alive...that is completely beside the point...

JC's blast from the past...

So, I just had to share some cute photos of "the kids" playing with some special toys saved from JC's childhood. We got an old bag of matchbox cars not too long ago that had belonged to JC as a kid. At first he didn't think he remembered any of them but one afternoon he decided to get them out to share with our little ones and boy did the memories come flooding back! Haha, I got all kinds of background information on all the different cars...which belonged to who, which ones were super cool and what purpose they all served, etc. It was fun to see such fun being had! Oh, and Bethany and James enjoyed themselves somewhat too... :)

A (late) HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRIBUTE!

Well, I did well for a while, acknowledging birthdays! And, of course, I had to get behind on a very important one - - my mom's! Now, it's hard to find the words when it comes to moms so I decided to get the help of someone who is never at a loss for words - - Little Miss Bethany! I recently got one of those "getting to know you" emails from a friend and thought I would use that as inspiration for asking Bethany a few questions about her grandma so I could use them as a little tribute. So, following is a profile of a very special lady...through the eyes of a three-year-old.

All about Grandma Trudie:

Favorite TV show: Barney

Favorite breakfast food: eggs

Middle name: Hawkes

Least favorite food: strawberries

Favorite CD: "Here we go Luby-Ly"

Kind of car she drives: a red one

Favorite kind of sandwich: cheese sandwich

Something that makes her sad: when I hit (not me, mind you...still coming from Bethany)

Favorite clothing: blue and black kind

Favorite vacation: to see Mickey Mouse

Birthday: in two minutes

Morning or night person: morning

Pets: fish and birds

Favorite flower: ours

Likes to listen to: music

Favorite crayon color: orange

Talk on the phone most to: Grandpa

Favorite drink: cherry juice

Hair color: black

Favorite toy: a ball

Favorite season: summer

Favorite candy: chocolate candy

Afraid of: bird poop

Well, there you have it...my mom! I almost wish Bethany weren't so intelligent and I could have gotten a few more crazy answers out of her! Haha, but one thing I will say is that she loved just sitting down and talking about Grandma! Her eyes lit up with every answer she got to give. It just goes to show how special her grandma is to her. I am pretty sure we all feel the same way. :) I wish I could give a better tribute but, it's one of those things that there just aren't the right words. She has always, and continues to, do so much for me, the rest of our family, friends, neighbors, and everyone she comes in contact with. Her example has just about laid a map for me in how to live a successful and happy life. I don't know what else I can say! I'm sure anyone with the best mom in the world knows...you can never tell them quite what they mean to you because there just aren't words!

So, Mom, happy late birthday. And, take a moment to pat yourself on the back for being the only thing or person to ever leave me without words!

We love you!!!

James enters the terrific two's!!!

Another fun birthday! Baby James is two! We can't believe it. Being much more laid back than his older sister, he didn't have an overwhelming grasp of and/or desire to largely celebrate his birthday this year! He is such a sweet, simple boy. Any time I would try to talk to him about how his birthday was coming up and we would have cake and presents and fun he just kind of ignored me or, if I pressed the matter too much, would get rather grumpy about it! So, although for Bethany's second birthday we did a big party, we decided to keep it simple for him. I am really beginning to see how their "little" personalities are so different! So, on his birthday, we had a few cousins/aunts/grandparents over and just let him play in the backyard! It happened to be conference weekend, so we just played in between the two sessions and it worked out perfectly. He had a blast. Here are some pictures from that day:

He started out the day by doing one of his favorite things: torturing the cat...ever since Bethany got a Mr. Potato Head for HER birthday, the kids have unfortunately decided that poor Scout has failing vision...James gets such a kick out of playing with Scout and luckily, Scout seems to be at least be somewhat amused by their interest in him!
We got James a t-ball...contraption of sorts...as a present from the family, so in the morning JC took the kids across the street to a greenbelt to play with it. It was a big hit! (Haha, I just made myself laugh for accidentally being funny...) Anyway, here's little James giving it his best shot!
Bethany was proud of her brother. Oh...I could just melt...so precious.
Now, of course, he gives her a turn.
Then, it's on to the backyard for some fun celebrating! Here comes Dad with the balloons!
Ben waits for everyone to arrive.

Then, the play begins. Here's Carrigan helping James up the slide.
And, of course, Ben gets some attention from Brittney.
After a while, it's time to open some presents. This is always really exciting for the kids (especially Bethany...she is really good at "helping" open presents). I think it gets a bit confusing though. They get handed something really pretty and told to rip it all up. But it's alright because there is always something really cool underneath! However, then, before they can even soak in what it is they have received, they are told to say "thank you" and the gift is taken from them, thrown into a pile that they are not allowed to touch yet and something new is shoved at them! Haha, there has got to be a better process! But, he sure loved all his new things!
The poor kid in the middle of the present opening process right after a new, fun gift has been taken away and not yet replaced by another one to open!
Aunt Monica entertaining Ben. He is not yet old enough to help open presents but, come next year, watch out!

Okay, so, here is the cake that James chose. After Bethany got her butterfly cake, she was excited for James to choose a cake. I kind of was too, if we're being honest. So, we ended up with an alligator cake which, by the way, I completely had looking like a gecko or shrek-like thing until I grabbed my sister, Monica, from the backyard and insisted she fix it! I didn't get as much of the visual arts gene! But she, and my nephew Colton, turned out a pretty impressive, very much alligator-looking cake! And, actually, JC baked it...I had very little to do with this cake! But, it turned out great and he loved it!
Blowing out the candles...
And, the best part...eating the cake!

After cake time it was time to say goodbye to everyone so they could go watch conference and we could get the kids down for naps. But, later on we ventured back out to explore some of the fun, new toys! Here is James, working with his new toolbench! Grandma Teri just knew he was ready to have a workshop like Daddy's!

Here's Bethany, really excited, as JC gets James' new bubble blowing lawnmower ready to play with. He was sweet and let her have the first turn!

And here she is! I love this because my mom got him one like my brother had when we were little! Memories!
A happy boy on a happy day!

Even though he wasn't sure about having a day all about him, James loved seeing some loved ones and enjoying some fun in the sun! I just love how happy and sweet our little boy is. There are so many hugs, kisses and random moments throughout the day when he just looks at me and says "Hi Mom!" that SO off-set any temper tantrums there may or may not be occassionally. :) Hey, what's a toddler without those? He's our fun, kind, determined boy. It's so fun to see them grow up. And, yikes! We've only just begun the process! That makes me so excited...and a little tired... :) Happy birthday James!
